The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution was born out of necessity in 1992, getting all of Mitsubishi’s high-tech rally-bred goodies developed for the heavier Galant to compete with Subaru on harsh rally stages. Of course, the car that was bred to jump over hills and sprint next to trees on dirt didn’t come to America until 2003 with the introduction of the slightly watered-down Lancer Evolution VIII.
For seven generations prior to that, Mitsubishi’s four-door sedan could be easily picked out from its econobox brethren thanks to a massive wing and rally-light sized fog lamps. Under the hood, the Lancer Evo sported Mitsu’s high-performance workhorse, the 4G63T — that is, until the Lancer Evo’s 10th installment, where the 4G63T was replaced with a similarly sized 2.0-liter turbocharged I4. That engine was called the 4B11T and was under the hood of the last Lancer Evo to roll off the assembly line in 2016.
